In their first season together the Brooklyn Nets struggled early. The additions of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett did not lead to immediate success. Add in a new head coach in Jason Kidd and the Nets were all kinds of bad in the first half of the season. Brook Lopez was limited to 17 games and the Nets continued to make adjustments. They had the best record in the second half of the season as they finished the season with 44 wins.
There was no star player for the Nets last year. They have big name guys like Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. They played well as a unit in the second half of the season. Williams has not returned to All-Star form and Kevin Garnett was a shell of his former self. He averaged a career low 6.5 ppg and 6.6 rpg. His numbers were about the same in the playoffs. Pierce and Johnson were the go to players late in games and they often delivered.
The Nets got a huge boost from Shaun Livingston. He started a career high 54 games for the Nets. He only averaged 8.3 ppg but he changed the dynamic of that team. He has great size and played really good defense. Mirza Teletovic was another guy who came on strong at the end of the season. He hit 136 threes while shooting 39%.
They traded away most of their draft picks. They did manage to acquire three 2nd round picks during the draft.
Jason Kidd wanted more power in the organization and was denied. He then left to coach the Milwaukee Bucks. The Nets got an upgrade with coach Lionel Hollins. He’s a defensive minded coach who last coached Memphis to the Western Conference Finals.
In the off-season Paul Pierce left and signed with the Wizards. That was a huge lost for this team. They are not getting any younger and Pierce was vital down the stretch. Andray Blatche was a surprise last year but he has signed to play in China. Shaun Livingston signed with the Warriors. These were all key pieces for the Nets last season.
They managed to add Jarrett Jack to backup Deron Williams but their other additions are unproven. Brook Lopez will be returning but it remains to be seen if he will be healthy. There was an upgrade at coach but he lost a lot of talent. Deron Williams will have to return to All-Star form but I don’t think he can reach that level anymore. A lot of teams got better in the East; the Nets were not one of them. They will win 37-39 games this year.
