The Boston Celtics were terrible last season. Their roster is filled with role players in starting positions. Rajon Rondo returned from a knee injury to play in 30 games. Jeff Green and Brandon Bass were the only players to play in all 82 games for them last year as they only won 25 games.
With Rondo out Avery Bradley and Jordan Crawford started in the backcourt for the Celtics. Crawford played with Rondo out, recording a triple-double and he managed to win Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Bradley continued to improve on the offensive end while still being one of the best on ball defenders in the league. Jeff Green started every game but his play was not consistent. One day he would score 29 points against a tough Clippers team and then go out and score eight points in back to back games against the Knicks and Timberwolves.
When Rondo returned to the lineup the Celtics traded Jordan Crawford to the Golden State Warriors. The Celtics received Joel Anthony, a protected future draft pick and a 2016 second-round pick from the Heat. Things never got better for the Celtics as they only won five games in the last two months of the season.
The Celtics had a lot of questions heading into the draft with the 6th and 17th picks. With the 6th pick they drafted another point guard in Marcus Smart. He is a strong defender who has trouble shooting the ball. With the 17th pick they added James Young who can become a very good shooter in this league.
In the off-season the Celtics re-signed Avery Bradley to a four-year, $32 million contract. They are looking to move Rondo because he is in the last year of his deal. They drafted Smart to play alongside Bradley long term. They are both capable defenders and although Smart is not a great shooter Bradley has become a reliable corner three point shooter.
Marcus Thornton was a good pickup to add scoring off the bench. The rest of the roster is not that good. Trading Rondo for some assets would be their best option. They still have 1st round pick from last season Kelly Olynyk and Jared Sullinger in the middle. Jeff Green can also be a trade asset during the season.
This team needs draft picks or a solid starter. They will struggle once again as they try to find time for Marcus Smart, Phil Pressey, and James Young. I expect the Celtics to make a lot of trades during the season and therefore be worst this year. They will be between 17-20 wins.
