All eyes will be on Conley as he is expected to make $30 million next season. If he can’t stay healthy these next few seasons it will look like a bad contract. Conley has been a solid point guard for many years and he earned that contract because it so happened to be the max offer. It will be hard trading a contract that massive especially for an injured plagued point guard.
The Memphis Grizzlies fired coach Fizdale after 19 games last season. They finished the year 22-60. Many wondered if the Grizz would trade Marc Gasol or Mike Conley. Gasol looked to have lost a step and Conley had an injury plagued season before being shut down with season ending Heel surgery.
The Grizzlies started the season very well. They were 5-2 in October with wins over the Pelicans, Warriors and two wins over the Rockets. Conley is the leader of the team and when he went down, things went bad overall. Conley was limited to just 12 games (7-5) and over the past three seasons he’s played less than 70 games in all three seasons.
Mike Conley has a big contract but he’s been an underrated player for a long time. During the 2016-17 season Conley took a huge leap offensively. He’s always been regarded as a great defensive guard. That season he averaged 20 ppg for the first time in his career. He hit a career high 171 3-pointers while shooting 40% from beyond the arc. In the playoffs that year, his scoring went up and his good shooting continued.
With the welcome additions of Omri Casspi, Kyle Anderson and rookie Jaren Jackson Jr. the Grizzlies are expected to compete in the Western Conference. There will still be questions around Conley’s health until pre-season actually starts. A healthy Conley can make Marc Gasol look better and get a Grizzlies offense that finished 27th last season get back to being a top 20 offense.
