The Los Angeles Clippers finished the season 42-40. It may have been Doc Rivers best coaching job. They traded Blake Griffin and acquired Tobias Harris in the deal. This was the 3rd time that Harris has been traded in his career. He’s only 26 and he had a good season for the Clippers.
Tobias Harris turned down an $80-million-dollar extension from the Clippers. He believes he can make more money next season as an unrestricted free agent. He played the best ball of his career after the trade. His shooting percentages went up after the trade and he averaged 19 ppg. In total he hit a career high 183 3-pointers. That was good enough to finish in the top 20 in the league.
A healthy Danilo Gallinari may be slightly better than Harris but he’s never quite healthy. Besides Lou Williams, Harris is the only go-to scorer on this team. This has a chance to be the best season for Tobias Harris. He will have a full season with this team and a higher usage rate. He will have plenty of opportunities to shoot the ball but he has to work on being a better playmaker.
He shot 41% from 3-point range last season at almost six attempts per game. That high percentage may not hold up because he will be taking more shots. The next step for him will to learn how to get to the free throw line. He has a big frame with a decent handle. He has to be able to attack the basket and at least attempt four free throws per game. With a higher usage rate he should improve in that aspect.
The Clippers shocked a lot of people by being so competitive after the trade. The West has gotten tougher with the addition of LeBron James. I don’t expect the Clippers to make the playoffs but Harris will have nights where he puts the team on his back and carries them to victory. With each good game his price in free agency will go up.
