The Detroit Pistons were a disappointment once again. Even after acquiring Blake Griffin they finished the season 39-43. Stan Van Gundy was let go and they hired reigning NBA coach of the year Dwane Casey. Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond are the best players on the roster but all eyes will be on Reggie Jackson.
The Pistons started the season very well. They were 14-6 heading into December. Something went wrong and they lost seven in a row. Jackson got hurt and the season was basically over. Jackson has many flaws as a player but somehow things worked when he was out there. He was bad when he returned from injury but the Pistons had nothing to play for at that time.
He can work the two-man game with Drummond. He has the confidence to take big shots late in games. He has to improve his 3-point shooting off the catch because Griffin and Drummond are good passers. Jackson has to dribble less, move the ball and make quick decisions. All blame will go on Jackson if this team struggles at any point.
If he plays well the Pistons can make a push for the playoffs. He can make things easier for both Drummond and Griffin. If he continues to struggle he may be benched for Ish Smith and eventually end up in trade rumors.
Jackson is a lower tier point guard in this league although he thinks he’s one of the best. Another bad season can lead to be a bench player or even out of the league in the future. His time in Detroit has not been the best and with a new coach this has to be a bounce back season for him.
The Cavs will take a step back and maybe that opens up the door for the Pistons to make it to the playoffs in a weaker Eastern Conference. Jackson may not be an All-Star this season but he could be a productive guard on a playoff team.
