After winning 60 games in 2014-15 season the Atlanta Hawks win total dropped each season (48,43,24). Mike Budenholzer decided to part ways with the team and he joined the Milwaukee Bucks. Lloyd Pierce was appointed head coach and it is his first head coaching job. The Hawks were 24-58 and last in the Eastern Conference. During the draft they made a trade with the Dallas Mavericks and got Trae Young.
Trae Young will be an interesting rookie. He is now the face of the franchise after the Hawks traded away Dennis Schroder. His strengths are his shooting ability and his passing ability. His biggest weakness is his defense and his small frame at point guard.
During the Salt Lake City Summer league, he struggled with his shot. He took a lot of the same shots he took in college and he just couldn’t find the basket. He seemed to figure it out during the Las Vegas Summer League. If he wasn’t shooting the ball well, he was making great passes.
Young will struggle a lot during his rookie season but he will have his moments. He will have games where he knocks down a few long 3-pointers, there will be games where he hits 7 3-pointers and then he will have games where he’s 1-10 from deep range. We should not just focus on the shots made with Young. He is a great passer and he will get his teammates involved. He has the vision and that is the first step to being a great passer; similar to Lonzo Ball. This is an elite skill to have especially for a young player. He may find chemistry with John Collins, the Hawks young big man.
This Hawks roster is not good at all. They have a new head coach and a rookie point guard who will have the ball in his hand a lot. Things will get bad for them very quickly and they will probably have the worst record in the Eastern Conference again. His rookie season won’t tell the entire story so be patience with him. He does give the Hawks some excitement for the upcoming season.
As the Hawks acquire better players around Young he should look better. He will have a very high usage and a negative efficiency rating. The narrative on Young will be on a roller coaster all season as he learns the league. All eyes will be on him as he plays Western Conference guards because of his bad defense.
With such a bad roster and a new head coach Trae Young’s rookie season might be a forgettable one. Again he will have his moments and will swing some games because he is a threat to shoot from 25 feet. He may put up the scoring numbers but don’t expect him to be there for the rookie of the year race.
