Chris Paul entered an exclusive club Sunday afternoon against the Miami Heat. After dishing out 18 assists, Paul became just the 10th player in NBA history with 8,000 assists. The list includes hall of famers John Stockton, Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson, Isiah Thomas and Gary Payton. Future hall of famers Jason Kidd and Steve Nash. The professor Andre Miller and Mark Jackson.
The top five names on this list all have 10,000 assists (Stockton, Kidd, Nash, Jackson, Johnson). Stockton and Kidd are the only players to have over 10,000; with Kidd at 12,091 and Stockton at 15,806.
Chris Paul has had an incredible career ranking in the top 10 in assists every year since he entered the league back in 2005. He’s been in the top 6 every season except the 2009-10 season when he was injured and played in only 45 games. That year he finished 9th.
He averages about 667 assists a year for his career. He has led the league in total assists three times and has averaged the most assists per game four times in his career. He’s averaged double-digits assists six times in his career and he’s only been under 9.0 assists per game just twice.
This season he’s had three games with 15 or more assists including a 20 assist game. On his current pace he will still be 10th by season’s end but should pass Andre Miller around this time next year. If Paul gets 500 assists each season for the next four years he will be the 6th player to enter the 10,000 assists club.
