The New York Knicks are on the clock with the 4th pick in the draft. They have money to spend for free agency and they need a lot of help. Right now they have Carmelo Anthony, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jose Calderon and Cleanthony Early under contract. They could go with a point guard or a big man.
4) New York Knicks – Jahlil Okafor (C – Duke)
The Knicks have many options here but Okafor is a good fit. He’s a big man who has great moves around the basket. If the Knicks continue to run the triangle then Okafor is a good fit.
In his one season at Duke he averaged 17.3 ppg, 8.5 rpg on 66% shooting and they won the National Championship. His post moves are advanced for his age. He can beat his defender off the dribble, he has spin moves and jump hooks. He has good hands and a soft touch around the basket.
Right now he struggles from the line and he’s not great on the defensive end. He is in better shape since he left Duke so maybe he can improve on the defensive side of the ball.
The Knicks tried to have a bunch of shooters and it hasn’t worked. With Okafor they can slow down the pace and let him work. If he gets doubled then he can kick it out to shooters. He moves well without the ball and should be Carmelo Anthony’s new best friend.
The last great big man the Knicks had was Patrick Ewing. Fans would love Okafor but should not compare the two players. He is often compared to Tim Duncan. Coach K said he needs a better work ethic to be as great as Duncan.
The Knicks have money to spend during free agency but having Okafor-Anthony is a good start.
