The Sacramento Kings are 18-34 and are near the bottom of the Western Conference. After the All-Star break they will have their third coach of the season. George Karl will take over for Ty Corbin who took over after Mike Malone was fired earlier this season.
Can George Karl save the Kings? He did great things with that Denver Nuggets team. They did not have a superstar during the 2012-13 season and still won 57 games. Karl is a great coach with a lot of wins but it will be tough coaching DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins is an All-Star but he doesn’t have the best attitude. Karl will need to get the best out of Cousins if Sacramento wants to change things around soon.
Coming into the season DeMarcus Cousins was supposed to be a changed man after his time with Team USA. The Kings got off to a 9-6 start which was good in a tough Western Conference. Cousins got along with then coach Mike Malone. He enjoyed playing for him and he looked good early on.
On November 28th DeMarcus Cousins missed his first game of the season. He was battling a case of viral meningitis. Cousins would be out until December 18th. During that time the Kings panicked and fired Mike Malone on December 15th, 24 games into the season.
The Kings looked to assistant coach Ty Corbin for take over the team. Corbin is not seen as a great head coach in this league. He is a decent assistant but as the man in charge he is just terrible. He is 7-20 this season and will be out of a job after the All-Star break.
The Kings have no identity. Instead of giving Malone time to grow with this team they fired him after one full season. Sometimes a coach needs a chance to grow with a team. DeMarcus Cousins is your best player and he liked the coach. This is Cousins’ fifth season and George Karl will be his fifth coach.
At this point in the season the Kings should continue to lose games. The owner Vivek Ranadive even suggested playing 4-on-5 defense, leaving one player to cherry-pick. This team is a joke right now and losing might be the best thing for them.
They keep their draft pick if it is in the top 10. Hopefully they don’t have another crowd source draft; which resulted in them drafting Nik Stauskas with the 8th pick in the draft. Stauskas is averaging 3.4 ppg this season. Earlier this season the Kings were looking to move Stauskas.
Three coaches in one season is a lot. What was the rush to get George Karl in now? He won’t be able to implement all his offensive sets. It was reported that the Kings were waiting for Cousins to give them the okay to hire Karl. Well now Cousins has approved of another new coach. Karl will have his hands full with this team.
The Kings don’t have a very good roster. They have won only five games in 2015. Going forward the core of the team will be Rudy Gay, DeMarcus Cousins and Ben McLemore. Maybe Karl can make McLemore a better player. They need to make some roster moves and they need to get this top 10 pick right this draft.
It will be a long process for Coach Karl. The West is tough, Cousins can be difficult and this organization does not have a clear direction so who knows what panic move they might make next. If given enough time George Karl could make this team better.
