According to CBS Sports Ken Berger the Sacramento Kings are looking for some frontcourt help and are willing to put rookie Nik Stauskas in a deal.
The Kings started the season 5-1. They were 9-6 before DeMarcus Cousins missed time with viral meningitis. During that time they fired Mike Malone and named lead assistant Tyrone Corbin the head coach for the rest of the season.
There is no problem with the Kings trying to trade Nik Stauskas but he is a guy they should have never drafted. In the 2013 NBA draft, a draft considered weak by most experts the Kings drafted Ben McLemore with the 7th pick. He is a 6-5 shooting guard who was a great athlete.
With the 8th pick in the 2014 NBA draft the Kings drafted Nik Stauskas. A 6’6 guard who could possibly play both guard positions and was a knock down shooter. Why draft the same position in back-to-back years?
There is no reason to draft the same position in back-to-back years unless you are drafting a future All-Star. The Kings crowdsourced their draft and these group of people decided to pick Nik Stauskas instead of a stretch four in Noah Vonleh, a point guard in Elfrid Payton or even trading down to get Adreian Payne.
After the pick Matt Moore of CBS Sports gave the Kings a D+ for that selection. Moore says, “I look at their possibilities here and I think there were other options that they could have gone with that would have been better for them.”
This season McLemore has increased his scoring and shooting percentages from his rookie season. I’m not saying McLemore is shaping up to be an All-Star but you have to give the guy a chance. There were rumors that the Kings might trade him. Well unless there was a deal in place to trade McLemore on draft night the Kings should have went in another direction.
Teams need to draft players they can use immediately. Stauskas is averaging 3.6 ppg and only shooting 27% from beyond the arc. He is not a bust but he does fit with this team. Certain players have to find the right fit on a team to succeed in this league.
The Kings are now 16-22 and are looking for anyone to play next to DeMarcus Cousins, who is having an All-Star season averaging 24 ppg and 12 apg.
The draft is very important especially when it comes to those lottery picks. The Kings Crowdsource draft idea would be deemed a failure if they trade Stauskas during his rookie season. Next time know your personnel and draft a guy that will fit with your team.
