It was good to see the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks make a trade early in the season. We all knew the Celtics were shopping Rondo but instead of waiting until the deadline in February both teams made something happen in December.
There are teams out there that could use another piece to make a playoff push, improve their playoff seeding or even make a run at the NBA Finals. I used the trade checker on Realgm and the NBA trade machine on ESPN. I will post links to both trades. ESPN shows the salaries and Realgm gives you a good explanation of why the trade is successful. So with all that said, let’s make a trade.
The Brooklyn Nets are looking to move some big contracts in Joe Johnson, Deron Williams and Brook Lopez. Johnson is the most valuable out of the bunch. He has been healthy and he can shoot. The Pelicans need a shooting guard and help with their outside shooting.
Eric Gordon is often injured as he is now and he is not producing when he plays anyway. Austin Rivers is not showing any signs of improvement and John Salmons is a shell of a shell of his old self. Joe Johnson is expected to make$23 million this season and $24 million next season. Eric Gordon will make $14 million this season and he has a player option for $15 million next season. The Nets would be saving some money with this deal.
Joe Johnson spaces the floor for Anthony Davis and he would give the Pelicans another reliable scoring option in their starting lineup. Johnson is also very good in the clutch. Brooklyn could also use this trade to acquire some draft picks because they don’t have their own first round pick until 2019.
Brendan Haywood to Nuggets for Timofey Mozgov - http://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/6547730 http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=l6yqw88
Even before Anderson Varejao went down with a season ending injury the Cavaliers needed some rim protection. On Realgm this trade goes through with no problem. On ESPN the trade is rejected at first. I had to save the trade and then it readjusted adding trade exceptions for both teams.
Brendan Haywood is a valuable asset for the Cavaliers. Yea I know that sounds funny but Haywood makes $2.2 million this season, but next year he has a non-guaranteed income of $10.5 million. This means the Cavs could trade Haywood for a player making up to $14 million annually.
I know Mozgov does not sound like a great pick up but he’s a big body who gives you nine points and eight rebounds. He should get a few more open looks because he is playing with LeBron James. He averages a block a game and the Cavs need someone to protect the paint.
The Cavs could also use a real shooting guard but they have enough offensive weapons. Their defense is poor and Mozgov would help them immediately on that end.
Landry Fields to Nuggets for Wilson Chandler - http://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/6548169
The Denver Nuggets have assets and should look to move some of them. The Toronto Raptors are a very good team but could use another wing defender and scorer to come off the bench.
Landry Fields is on the last year of his deal and he does not help the Raptors when he plays. Trading Wilson Chandler allows the Nuggets to play rookie Gary Harris more. Harris has good size and can share the floor with either Ty Lawson or Nate Robinson. With the injury to Danilo Gallinari, Alonzo Gee moves into the starting lineup.
The Raptors get a guy who can play defense and knock down an open three pointer. Chandler has the size to be a small ball four. Right now Lou Williams is the only real scoring threat that comes off the bench. Greivis Vasquez is a willing passer that should get Chandler some open looks.
