Greg Monroe was a restricted free agent and he just signed a $5.5 million qualifying offer with the Detroit Pistons.
He had a good season last year averaging 15 and 9 rebounds. The Pistons added Josh Smith last season and that affected Monroe in a negative way. There were too many big men on the Pistons along with emerging star Andre Drummond. Monroe wanted out and he did not want to resign with the Pistons.
There were no offers for Monroe because the Pistons could match any offer. I think Monroe purposely avoided offer sheets because he feared the Pistons would match any long term offer. There were some discussions about a sign and trade for Monroe but nothing came about.
There will be a lot of pressure on Monroe this season to deliver. He has to if he wants to get paid. If he is hurt or has a down year then that affects his long-term money. If the Pistons somehow move Josh Smith and the situation improves with the Pistons he can still resign with them as an unrestricted free agent.
The good news for Monroe in this situation is he can’t be traded without his consent. The best move for the Pistons going forward would be to move Josh Smith and keep Monroe and Drummond as their big men.
