Team USA played the Dominican Republic in New York before the tournament. The US beat DR 105-62 in that game without Derrick Rose. A win against the Dominican Republic today would clinch group C for the US.
Francisco Garcia is the only NBA player for the Dominican Republic but he missed the game after spraining his ankle in the previous game. The US team has a lot of shooters but they still can’t find their shooting touch. They came out firing three pointers but only hit four in the whole half. Kenneth Faried was the man again, attacking the glass and scoring without having plays run for him. The defense kept the Dominican Republic off the free throw line in the 1st quarter. However Team USA was only up 25-22 after one.
Anthony Davis missed a couple of dunks in the 1st quarter and didn’t score his first basket in the 2nd quarter. Going into halftime he had six points, four rebounds and four blocks. The defense was able to get six blocks and six steals. They were taking open 3 pointers but they only shot 4-14 in the 1st half. Kenneth Faried led team USA with 10 points and DeMarcus Cousins came off the bench and added nine points as team USA closed the 2nd quarter on a 6-0 to go up 54-41. They outscored the Dominican Republic 31-19 in the 2nd quarter.
Kenneth Faried picked up where he left off in the 3rd quarter as he scored six points before sitting down. The US push the lead up to 20 quickly and there was no looking back. The bench came in to close the quarter on an 11-0 run. The highlight of the quarter was a big dunk by DeMar DeRozan.
At one point the US scored 22 straight points and the lead was up to 40. Mason Plumlee and Andre Drummond came in when the game was well in hand. DeMar DeRozan and DeMarcus Cousins played really well off the bench. Cousins had his best game with 13 points 5 rebounds and 7 steals.
Everyone scored once again for the US. Mason Plumlee had a nice behind the head alley-oop to Andre Drummond. This team continued to struggle from 3 point land, shooting 6-21. They will need to knock down some three pointers against the tougher teams. They turned the ball over 17 times as well; most of them coming after the game was well in hand. They did have 18 steals and 8 blocks which allowed them to get out and run.
Kenneth Faried again led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Davis and Harden chipped in with 10 points apiece and Steph Curry added 8 points and 7 assists. DeRozan, Cousins and Gay led the way off the bench. Team USA won the game 106-71 and they clinched group C before tomorrow’s game.
