The Detroit Pistons were one of the worst defensive teams in the league last season. They scored 101 ppg but gave up 104 ppg. They added Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings but neither player thrived in their new system. Smith and Jennings led the team in scoring but they were inefficient and the Pistons struggled to win 29 games.
Andre Drummond was a standout player for the Pistons this past season. He was not on a minutes restriction and started 81 games averaging 32 minutes per game. He was second in the NBA with 57 double-doubles. He averaged 13 ppg and 13 rpg. He is still raw offensively and he’s a terrible free throw shooter. However Drummond was the only bright spot for the Pistons last season.
Josh Smith led the team in scoring but he continued to annoy everyone by taking jump shots. Smith is not a good jump shooter but he took 265 three pointers. He only hit 26% of those shots, right around his average. Since Smith is not a long range threat it was hard playing him next to natural big men in Drummond and Greg Monroe. Monroe was solid all season averaging 15 ppg and 9 rpg.
Brandon Jennings watched his scoring dip as he shot 37% from the field. The Pistons struggled shooting the basketball. For the season they were at 44% while allowing opponents to shoot 47%. They were even worst from three point land. They finished 29th at 32% while opponents shot 36%.
They only had a 2nd round draft pick this year and they got point guard Spencer Dinwiddie from Colorado. He’s a big guard listed at 6’6 who has some range. He’s coming off an injury so he will have to work his way into the rotation.
The biggest move of the off-season was the addition of Stan Van Gundy as the head coach. Van Gundy has had previous success with the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic and he will have to work hard to turn this team around.
Greg Monroe was a restricted free agent and did not receive any offers. He ended up signing a one year qualifying offer so he can become an unrestricted free agent next season. Monroe does not want to be in Detroit with Josh Smith. They don’t play well together because there is no spacing. Rodney Stuckey left and joined the Pacers. They added a shooter in Jodie Meeks to go along with D.J. Augustin.
This team needs to make some moves to improve their roster. Jennings is not the answer at point guard and Josh Smith has to go so they can resign Greg Monroe. Unless Van Gundy can make sure Josh Smith stops shooting jumpers than he has to be traded. Andre Drummond learned something while winning a gold medal at the World Cup so he will be much improved. Van Gundy will make them a better team but they have a long way to go to be a playoff team. They will win 33-35 games this year.
