The Kings were the only team last season to have three players average at least 20 ppg. DeMarcus Cousins, Isaiah Thomas and newly acquired Rudy Gay were also the only players to average double figures for the Kings but that did not translate into victories. The Kings could never find the right combination of players that would lead to more wins. They ended the season losing 6 of their last 8 games finishing with a 28-54 record.
DeMarcus Cousins had a great year for the Kings. He had a career high 53 double-doubles while averaging a career best 22.7 ppg and grabbing 11.7 rpg. He was only ejected once this season after being ejected four times last year. He was around his average of 16 technical fouls though. Rudy Gay finished with the highest shooting percentage of his career after joining the Kings from the Raptors. He was a solid player and leader for this young team.
The Kings acquired former number two pick Derrick Williams. He still struggled with his new team. He has no true position and he still can’t shoot. After a decent 2012-13 season Jason Thompson regressed and lost his starting job to Reggie Evans.
Ben McLemore, their number 1 pick in 2013 did not stand out. His biggest highlights of year were LeBron dunking on him and his dunk at All-Star weekend over Shaq. He never consistently knocked down open shots. He finished the season shooting only 37% from the field and 32% from three. The Kings will need him to improve his game greatly. He has the frame to be a good defender and he should focus on that aspect of his game.
The Kings landed the 8th pick in the draft. They went with Nik Stauskas which was strange because they picked McLemore the year before. Stauskas played some point guard in college but I don’t think he will be an elite ball handler in the pros. He can shoot the ball very well and if he gets time on the court with DeMarcus Cousins he should get a lot of open shots.
During the off-season Isaiah Thomas left and signed with the Suns. They added Darren Collison to replace him but I don’t think that is an upgrade. Collison was solid as a backup for the Clippers but he has not done that well when he has to lead a team.
Playing in the World Cup should help Gay and Cousins in the season. They will be more comfortable playing with each other and I think the experience made Cousins more mature. I think he will be dominate this year and his numbers will be better. They need a better supporting cast around him if they want to make the playoffs.
They should look to move Derrick Williams and Jason Thompson. There is a log jam at the forward positions and they could use another shooting guard. Alonzo Gee will be a good backup for Rudy Gay but their bench needs work. Ray McCallum has to knock down open threes to prove he can stay on the floor.
Another three point shooter would help this team that was tied at 27th in three point percentage. Cousins will be special this year and the Kings will be a better team. The West is still tough and the Kings are a player or two away from being a playoff team, they win 38-40 games.
