Throughout most of the year it seemed like the Philadelphia 76ers were the worst team in basketball. They lost 26 games in a row and somehow managed to win 19 games. They wanted to be bad to get a good draft picks and they traded away players for draft picks.
The Sixers were without their top pick Nerlens Noel for the whole season as he was recovering from an ACL tear. Instead they were led by rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams and they shocked the basketball world by beating the Miami Heat in their first game of the season. Michael Carter-Williams was amazing in his first game scoring 22 points, grabbing 7 rebounds to go along with 12 assists and 9 steals. The Sixers started the season 3-0 but sadly it was all downhill from there. Their roster was filled with D-league players throughout the season as they struggled to keep games close.
Michael Carter-Williams went on to win rookie of the year in a weak draft. During the season they traded away Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes for draft picks. Players such as Tony Wroten and Henry Sims were starting games for this team. It was sad watching this team play and it will get worse before it gets better.
They landed the number 3 pick in the draft. Most speculated that they would try to move the pick to move up in the draft. They really wanted Andrew Wiggins but they got his teammate in Joel Embiid. The only problem Embiid was hurt while working out and might miss the whole season. Whenever Embiid gets healthy he should fit nicely next to Nerlens Noel.
The Sixers also had the number 10 pick in the draft. They selected Elfrid Payton for the Orlando Magic. The swapped picks and received Dario Saric. Saric is a solid young player but he won’t be coming over to the NBA for two years. The Sixers had two top 10 picks and neither guy will play this year for them. In the second round they grabbed wing players K.J. McDaniels and Jerami Grant.
During the off-season the Sixers traded away their leading scorer Thaddeus Young to the Timberwolves. In return they got Alexey Shved and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. They will be heading into the season without their top two scorers from last year in Young and Evan Turner. Spencer Hawes was their best rebounder and he’s no longer on the team. Young was the leader for this young team and although Nerlens Noel will be playing this season, the Sixers will be a young bad basketball team.
The Sixers want to be a bad team. They have man draft pickings going forward and will most likely trade for more picks during the season. I look forward to seeing Nerlens Noel play. He was solid in summer league and Sixers fans should be excited for him. They won 19 games last year and they might be around that number again this year. Losing Turner and Young will hurt them and they will finish with the worst record in the league.
