Kidd Wants Power

The Nets shocked us all when they hired Kidd right after he retired from the Knicks. They added KG and Pierce. They were expected to be a top seed in the East, to compete with the Heat and Pacers. The Nets struggled early and often but finally turned it around to win 44 games and made the 2nd round of the playoffs before getting bounced by the Heat.

Now Jason Kidd wants more power. He wanted total control of basketball operations, a position held by general manager Billy King. Kidd didn’t want King out but he wanted a higher title than him. He wanted to be like Doc Rivers or Gregg Popovich. After struggling to start his coaching career I don’t think this is the time to ask for a raise. Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov told him no, so Kidd asked if he could interview with the Bucks.

The Bucks already have a coach in Larry Drew and a general manager John Hammond. Kidd was granted permission to talk to the Bucks. If Kidd leaves the Nets to head to the Bucks than the Nets would be compensated with a draft pick. Coaches are now trade pieces. Coaching in the NBA is a ruthless business. The Bucks just drafted Jabari Parker and now they might be getting a new coach/general manager.

If Kidd leaves the Nets I think KG and Pierce leave, KG might actually retire. It wouldn’t be a scramble to find a new coach because there are plenty of candidates out there. Mark Jackson and Lionel Hollins come to mind as coaches that would be a nice fit in Brooklyn. Free agency hasn’t started yet but the Nets made this off-season even more exciting.
