Mark Jackson had his best season as coach for the Golden State Warriors, winning 51 games in the regular season. During the 2012-13 season they made a run to the second round of the playoffs, surprising a lot of people. This season they lost in the 1st round to a very good Clippers team and Mark Jackson was fired. The Warriors hired rookie head coach Steve Kerr in hopes to get the Warriors deeper into the playoffs.
The Warriors were a solid team on both ends. They were 10th in both points per game and points allowed. Steph Curry had the best season of his career, averaging a career high in points and assists. He continues to be the best three point shooter, hitting a league high 261 while still shooting 42%. Curry had a career high 28 double-doubles and was tied for second with 4 triple-doubles.
Curry’s running mate Klay Thompson also had his best season. He’s still not the playmaker Curry is but he did increase his scoring. Thompson was second in three pointers made, hitting 223 at 41%. He looked more comfortable posting up smaller guards. David Lee was solid once again. Averaging 18 and 9, he was a scoring threat on the inside and gave the Warriors balance.
Two players in particular struggled, Harrison Barnes and Andre Iguodala. Iguodala came in and took the starting small forward job from Barnes. He was very good on defense but not that productive on the offensive end. He hit a couple of game winners but only averaged 9.3 ppg. Barnes regressed in his second season as he adjusted to coming off the bench. He had an impressive playoffs outing his rookie year, increasing his scoring from regular season to postseason. He did not have the same results this time around.
This team has not had a draft pick since 2012 when they picked Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli. The only major lost they had in the off-season was the firing of Mark Jackson. Jordan Crawford also left to play in China.
Steve Kerr has taken over and he is adding depth to this team. They added Shaun Livingston to backup Curry. Leandro Barbosa, Jason Kapono, Aaron Craft, Justin Holiday, Brandon Rush and James Michael McAdoo are all on the training camp roster.
Klay Thompson was in trade talks most of the off-season but they did not make the deal to bring in Kevin Love. I think that was a good move, they have the best starting backcourt in the league and it would be foolish to break that up. They were the top two three point makers this past season and should get better. Their time together for team USA will improve their confidence going forward.
This is Kerr’s first time coaching and I don’t know what to expect. The team has gotten better because of their depth. Livingston is coming off his best season with the Nets and will be a quality backup for Curry. He’s not a long range shooter but he has good size to take advantage of mismatches in the paint. Winning 51 games only earned them the sixth seed in the West and I don’t know if they will be that much better this season. They are still a good team and even with a new coaching staff they will win 49-51 games.
