Spurs hold on against Mavericks in season opener

It was a great start to the basketball season as the Spurs received their Championship rings and raised their banner. They were without starters Kawhi Leonard and Tiago Splitter.

Both teams started the game 0-3 before Danny Green hit the first basket of the season. The Spurs moved the ball around and got everyone involved early but they were sloppy with the basketball. They had eight assists but also six turnovers.

The Mavericks had three new faces in the starting lineup with Chandler Parsons, Tyson Chandler and Jameer Nelson. Tyson kept possessions alive by tapping the ball out and was very good defensively. He left in the 1st quarter after tweaking his back but he returned. Chandler Parsons had a slow start in his debut but his one basket was a good one.

The Spurs jumped out to an early lead and led by two points at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Mavericks took over in the 2nd quarter. Their bench played well scoring 18 points in the 1st half. Monta Ellis had the hot hand scoring eight straight points at the end of the quarter. He had a game high 14 points. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 10 points in the first half. The Mavs were able to hold the Spurs to only 19 points as they took a 53-45 lead into the half.

The Spurs started the 3rd quarter on a 10-2 run to tie the game.  It eventually turned into a 15-2 run for the Spurs. During that time Tyson Chandler and Dirk Nowitzki picked up technical fouls but that helped the Mavs answer the Spurs run.

Monta Ellis kept the Mavericks in it scoring eight points in the quarter. However Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili took over in the 3rd quarter. Parker had 10 points and Manu had nine. It was a back and forth game but the Spurs were much better in controlling the tempo. They shot 10-20 and scored 30 points, taking a 76-73 lead into the fourth.

There was a 10-4 by the Spurs to extend their lead. Their turnovers allowed the Mavericks to stay in the game. The Mavs answered with an 11-2 run of their own to take the lead.

Dirk Nowitzki got it going scoring eight points in the quarter as both teams traded baskets. In the end the Spurs big three made plays to win the game. Tim Duncan found a cutting Ginobili for a layup and then Tony Parker hit the go ahead three pointer to seal the game.

The Spurs won the game 101-100 but they were very sloppy with the basketball. They committed five turnovers in the fourth quarter and 20 for the game. They were lights out from beyond the arc shooting 14-28 (50%) and 52% overall for the game. They were led by Parker with 23 and Ginobili with 20. Tim Duncan added a double-double 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mavericks had a chance to win the game as Chandler Parsons missed a long three pointer. He struggled in his debut, shooting 2-10. Monta finished with 26 and Dirk had 18. Devin Harris was solid off the bench chipping in with 17 points.

It was a great game and the Mavericks will be a problem in the Western Conference this year. The Spurs will be better with the ball and they were without two starters. Overall it was a great start to the NBA season.
