Bradley Beal was injured in the first half against the Charlotte Hornets on October 10th. He had surgery and should be out for about two months. Beal was supposed to have a breakout year alongside John Wall and he still can but who will replace him?
The Wizards will not make a trade or sign another free agent to replace him so that means they have to look at their roster and find a player or a group of players to replace his production in the lineup. Martell Webster is not the answer because he is still recovering from an offseason back procedure.
Veteran Paul Pierce was a great addition to the team and will be a great leader during this time. His production will vary game to game so I think the two juniors must step up to replace Beal. Otto Porter Jr. and Glen Rice Jr. have to play better so the Wizards won’t miss a step without Beal.
I know both guys have not been good but maybe their success in Summer League will carry over to the season. Rice was the summer league MVP and Porter was on summer league 1st team. I know summer league does not count but the confidence to make plays was there for both players.
So far in the preseason Rice had a big first game scoring 18 points and going 3-4 from downtown. He has struggled in the next three games. Porter struggled in the first game shooting 1-10 for four points. However in the next three games he has scored 12, 14 and 13. This is a big deal considering his career high in points during his rookie season was only 9. Porter has shown an ability to get the foul line as well.
Beal is a big part of this team, he averaged 17 points last year. He also shot 40% from three point land while knocking down 2 a game. If Rice and Porter can combine for anything close to those numbers the Wizards won’t miss a beat while Beal is out.
